Sustainable Places 2025

8 – 10 October 2025

Milan

Monte Rosa 91 Conference Centre

In collaboration with the Comune di Milano, Sustainable Places 2025 (SP25) was held in the wonderful city of Milan, which has a robust real-estate market and thriving professional community in design, architecture, construction, built environment transformation, etc.

We invited SP25 participation from industry, policy, media and other stakeholders. The venue allowed us to co-design the event leveraging a 300 person amphitheater, 6 fully instrumented meeting rooms, open spaces, and dedicated networking areas.

SP25 is Access4you certified

SP25 has been certified by Access4you, the first accessibility and inclusivity certification awarded in Italy!
The conference warmly welcomed wheelchair users, the elderly, people with reduced mobility, people with hearing impairments and people with assistance dogs.

Travel and accommodation

If you had questions about which airport to select, here are three good options – all with convenient connections to Milan in under an hour:

  • Linate (LIN): The closest option, now directly connected to the Milan metro system via the new M4 line. You can reach most parts of the city in just 15–30 minutes.
  • Malpensa (MXP): Well connected via the Malpensa Express train, with two arrival stations — Milano Centrale and Milano Cadorna — both linked to the metro. Travel time: about 30 minutes.
  • Bergamo (BGY): Served by frequent shuttle buses departing just outside the terminal. They reach Milano Centrale in around 1 hour.

We have negotiated discounts from 3 hotels, which are found at the top of a list HERE comprising 16 “getting to the venue” friendly options. Milan offers a lot, so people may want to stay in different places for various reasons.

Author instructions and publication opportunity

A complete guide for SP25 presenters (workshops and single presentations, both onsite and online) is available below. It includes logistics and deadlines for delivering your files to the conference organisers, and instructions for registering to the online platform – RingCentral, formerly Hopin – the same platform used for SP21, SP22, and SP23. You can download the full SP25 logo pack as a zip file here.

Additionally, SP25 contributors associated with EU-funded projects may optionally submit peer-reviewed articles directly to Open Research Europe (ORE) in a dedicated collection. Check out ORE’s Article Guidelines for submission details. Articles must meet the following eligibility criteria: (i) At least one author must be involved in a running or finished Horizon 2020 or Horizon Europe project from the European Commission, and the article must be a result of that project. (ii) The article must be an original work (see section on Originality). More information can be found on ORE Policies. The flexible submission deadline is 31 December 2025.

Thank you for all your valued contributions to Sustainable Places 2025.

Rollups at SP25

Rollups were very welcome at SP25, but they must be accompanied by their display mechanisms. All attendees freely brought rollups (with the display mechanism), but if they preferred not to travel with them, a copy shop near the venue in Milan took care of the printing locally. To use this service, requests and graphic files were needed NO LATER THAN 22 September, so there was enough time to process and deliver all orders.

Service details:

  • Format: 85 x 200 cm rollup with display mechanism
  • Cost: €103 (VAT included)

This optional service was designed to simplify logistics and make your participation easier! Finally, no rollups were accepted by post prior to the event nor were any rollups returned by post after the conference. It was the rollup owner’s responsibility to bring/order and recuperate their property, or they were destroyed (and that’s not sustainable!).

Discover the SP25 Thematic Tracks

For the first time, SP was very proud to present a dedicated brochure outlining the SP25 Thematic Tracks. These curated sessions aimed to be the scientific and collaborative heart of the conference, hosted in Milan’s Monte Rosa 91 auditorium and designed to connect research, policy, and market actors around urgent sustainability challenges.

Each session was a unique opportunity to engage with real-world case studies, institutional stakeholders, and industry leaders, all in a high-visibility format supported by strategic sponsorships. Explore the full lineup here and discover how your project or organisation can contribute to shaping Europe’s sustainable future.

SP scope

Sustainability targets and climate change objectives cannot be met without addressing buildings and the built environment at the building, district and urban scale to include our transport and energy infrastructures. Renowned for showcasing results coming out of the EU Horizon 2020 and EU Horizon Europe Framework Programmes via the participation of cutting-edge research and innovation projects, the scope of SP is captured directly in its name. It involves designing, building and retrofitting the places we live and work in a more sustainable way.

SP concept

SP prides itself on being an ideal platform for the dissemination of research, the conduct of workshops, EU project clustering and networking between stakeholders of all types. SP25 was held over three days in a hybrid (digital + in-person) event format. Between opening and closing keynote sessions, parallel technical sessions and project-organized workshops explored the various conference themes. Given world events we encouraged submissions on technology transfer, renewable energy implementations and energy security with the aim of facilitating actions that increase the rate of renovation and renewable energy implementations.

SP themes

Each year, Sustainable Places features topics that are shaping how we think about cities and the built environment. Across all editions, Sustainable Places is open to all topics related to building sustainability and most often reflect priorities described in the European Commission Societal Challenges and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

For SP25, we proposed the list of themes shown to the right. These themes were non-exhaustive and proposals received on other topics related to sustainability were considered for acceptance.

  • Energy communities, smart cities & urban transition
  • Sustainable construction & renovation
  • Climate change mitigation & adaptation
  • Facilitating the energy transition: policy, finance, training
  • Sustainable urban renewal & cultural transformation
  • Renewable energy technologies
  • Decarbonisation & circularity
  • Resilience & energy security
  • Data centres, digital twins & artificial intelligence for sustainability

Sponsorship opportunities

We again welcomed and invited sponsorship at SP25. For organizations looking to increase brand exposure and visibility to Europe’s top R&D performers, sponsorship offered an excellent mechanism to do that. Sponsors counted on excellent visibility, assistance with networking, the opportunity to exhibit and the opportunity to co-create moments that met their specific objectives. SP24 in Luxembourg concluded with 14 sponsoring organizations which facilitated the excellent program and experience we were able to offer. Explore / download the SP25 Sponsorship Brochure (and logos below), and feel free to pass along to your contacts that might be interested / benefit in sponsorship of SP26 in Luxembourg (December 2026).
